OverviewThe Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a licensed
registered nurse who has completed graduate education in nursing as
an Advanced Practice Nurse. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, the CNS
embodies knowledge in a specialized area of nursing and promotes
quality patient care through three spheres of influence: the
patient, nursing personnel, and the organization. The CNS works
collaboratively with nursing leadership, physicians, and other
disciplines to improve quality patient outcomes and patient care

CNS PRACTICE: PATIENT/CLIENT SPHERE
- Provides direct patient education to a specific patient
population in order to decrease or prevent symptoms/suffering,
improve functioning, modify risk behaviors, and emphasize health
promotion lifestyles utilizing teach-back methods.
- Develops programs of care for specific patient
populations.
- Integrates theories of health promotion along with
evidence-based practice to develop interventions based on the best
science
- Promotes a culture of safety to improve quality of patient
care
- Identifies resources needed to assist ongoing care of the
patient.
- Promotes the implementation, evaluation, and application of
family-centered care. -
- Evaluates patient care outcomes via the quality assurance
process.ADULT/GERIATRIC CNS PRACTICE: NURSES AND NURSING PRACTICE
SPHERE
- Exerts influence through peer consultation, role-modeling, and
education with other nursing personnel to improve nursing practice
and thus improve patient outcomes.
- Participates in professional nursing activities within the
health system, community, and professional organizations.
- Provides clinical expertise and mentorship to assist nurses to
develop new skills.
- Identifies needed changes in nursing practice and utilizes
change strategies to facilitate those changes.
- Participates in scholarly activity related to clinical nursing
practice (e.g., publishing, presenting, research activities,
translation of evidence into practice).
- Supports clinical professional development of nursing staff
(i.e., certification, continued professional education, involvement
in professional organizations).ADULT/GERIATRIC CNS PRACTICE:
ORGANIZATION/SYSTEM SPHERE
- Collects, analyzes and presents data to document the impact of
nursing practice on patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness.
- Influences/assists in the development of nursing care
initiatives and programs aligned with the organization's strategic
priorities, mission, vision, and philosophy.
- Participates in departmental and organizational
multidisciplinary groups requiring advanced practice and/or
clinical expertise to integrate evidence based best practice.

- Evaluates programs of care for appropriateness of
implementation across the continuum of care.
- Participates in or leads the development and revision of
guidelines/policies/order sets/protocols. -QualificationsMinimum
RequirementsPreferred or SpecializedEducation:Master of Science or
Doctorate in Nursing with completion of an Adult or Adult-Gero
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) program accredited by the CCNE or
NLNACExperience:Five or more years of nursing experience, with two
years in the clinical area of expertise.Previous demonstration of
nursing leadership skills preferred.License(s)/Certification(s): -
Current Iowa License to practice as a Registered Nurse -
Certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist by the ANCC or AACN
required within 2 years of employment - BCLS, ACLS if working in
critical care - Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for
work-related reasons Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Must be able to
communicate effectively with people of diverse professional
educational and lifestyle backgrounds. Knowledge of basic computer
skills. Other:Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform
essential functions of the position.
