more!GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe sleep technologist reports directly to
the Medical Director or designee to provide comprehensive
evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and
out of center testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions,
comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. This
person must be able to perform the duties defined for a sleep
technician and able to provide oversight of other sleep center
staff. The sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep
technology.ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIESPromotes healthy sleep hygiene
practices to all patients taking into consideration each unique
situation. Complete the ordered study following procedure protocols
to ensure collection of appropriate date. Maintain equipment in
proper working order by inspecting it before each test. Assist with
inventory control procedures. Report broken equipment per
Broadlawns Medical Center policies. Perform appropriate physiologic
calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required
adjustments. Follow a 'light's out' procedure to establish and
document baseline values (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation,
respiratory and heart rates, etc.) Perform data acquisition while
monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are
artifact-free. Identify, correct and document artifact Follow a
'lights on' procedure to verify integrity of collected data and
complete the data collection process (repeat the physiological and
instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on procedure for
results follow up, etc.) Document routine observations, including
sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other
significant events in order to facilitate scoring and
interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implement appropriate
interventions such as positive airway pressure, oxygen
administration and any actions necessary for patient safety.
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and
provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and
education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted
guidelines. Score clinical events (such as respiratory events,
cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) using AASM
standards. Demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to perform
portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.
Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for out of
center sleep testing. Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and
disinfection procedures for all sleep related equipment. Send all
completed tests to the Medical Director for interpretation of
results. Identify areas for quality improvement and participates in
departmental meetings, performance improvement projects and
community education programs. Generates accurate reports by
tabulating sleep/wake and clinical events. Support and embrace
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. All other duties as
assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSPerform duties and responsibilities
in accordance with Medical Center policies and procedures. Current
BLS certification Successful completion of an accredited
educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree
with an emphasis in sleep technology OR successful completion of a
sleep technology program.Must be associated with a state licensed
and/or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent
experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required
of a sleep technicianCertification by a nationally recognized
certification board and holds either the Registered Sleep
Technologists (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
(RPSGl), or Sleep Disorder.. Specialist (SOS) credential.Hold a
current license in the State of Iowa for Polysomnography or a dual
license in Respiratory Therapy and Polysomnography.PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONSAssociates Degree in a Health related field. Two
years of experience in direct patient care. Eighteen months
experience in polysomnography testing.
